What is Estramon Comp?

Estramon Comp is a sequential combined hormone replacement therapy (HRT) patch used to treat symptoms of menopause. It contains two hormones: estradiol, a form of estrogen, and norethisterone acetate, a type of progesterone (also called a progestogen).

Unlike continuous combined HRT, Estramon Comp follows a cyclical or sequential regimen. This means you use estrogen alone during part of the cycle and estrogen combined with progesterone during another part. Because of this pattern, you may experience a monthly withdrawal bleed, similar to a light period.

Estramon Comp is typically prescribed if:

• You are in perimenopause (your periods are irregular but not fully stopped), or
• You are within 12 months after your last natural period

It is designed for women who still have their womb and need both estrogen replacement and protection of the womb lining.

Estramon Comp is a transdermal HRT patch, meaning the hormones are absorbed through your skin directly into your bloodstream. This avoids passing through your digestive system and provides stable hormone levels.

What is Estramon Comp used for?

Estramon Comp is used to relieve menopause symptoms caused by declining estrogen levels.

During menopause, estrogen levels drop significantly. This hormonal change can cause:

• Hot flushes
• Night sweats
• Sleep problems
• Mood swings
• Vaginal dryness
• Brain fog
• Fatigue
• Reduced libido

Hot flushes and night sweats are called vasomotor symptoms, which means your body’s temperature control system is disrupted by hormonal changes.

Estramon Comp may also help maintain bone density. After menopause, lower estrogen levels increase the risk of osteoporosis, a condition where bones become thinner and more fragile. Hormone replacement therapy can help slow down bone loss in women who are at risk.

Estramon Comp is particularly suitable if you still experience occasional periods or are early in menopause.

How does Estramon Comp work?

Estramon Comp works by replacing the hormones your body gradually stops producing during menopause.

Estradiol (Estrogen)

Estradiol is chemically similar to the estrogen your body naturally produces. It helps:

• Reduce hot flushes and night sweats
• Improve vaginal dryness
• Support mood and sleep
• Maintain bone strength

Norethisterone (Progestogen)

If you still have your womb, estrogen alone can cause the lining of your womb (called the endometrium) to become too thick. Over time, this may increase the risk of endometrial cancer.

Norethisterone protects your womb by preventing excessive thickening of the lining. In sequential HRT like Estramon Comp, progesterone is added during part of the cycle, which may result in a scheduled monthly bleed.

Because the patch delivers hormones through your skin, you receive steady hormone absorption. This transdermal delivery system may reduce hormone fluctuations compared to oral tablets.

Who should not use Estramon Comp?

You should not use Estramon Comp if:

• You have or have had breast cancer
• You have estrogen-dependent cancer (such as cancer of the womb lining)
• You have unexplained vaginal bleeding
• You have untreated endometrial hyperplasia
• You have or have had blood clots
• You have a blood clotting disorder
• You recently had a heart attack or stroke
• You have severe liver disease
• You are allergic to estradiol or norethisterone

Always inform your doctor about your medical history before starting hormone replacement therapy.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Estramon Comp is not a contraceptive.

You must not use this medication if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant. Although fertility decreases during menopause, pregnancy is still possible in perimenopause.

Estramon Comp should not be used while breastfeeding.

If you suspect pregnancy while using this patch, remove it and contact your doctor.

How to use Estramon Comp and dosage

Always use Estramon Comp exactly as prescribed.

Because it is a sequential HRT patch, you follow a cycle:

• First phase: estrogen-only patch
• Second phase: combined estrogen and progestogen patch

Your doctor will explain your exact schedule.

How to apply:

• Apply to clean, dry, unbroken skin
• Suitable areas include the lower abdomen or buttocks
• Do not apply to your breasts
• Press firmly for at least 10 seconds
• Change patches according to your prescribed schedule

Rotate the application site to reduce skin irritation.

You may experience a predictable monthly bleed during the progestogen phase. This is normal in sequential HRT.

Possible side effects

Like all medicines, Estramon Comp may cause side effects.

Common side effects include:

• Breast tenderness

• Nausea
• Mood changes
• Skin irritation
• Scheduled monthly bleeding
• Irregular spotting

More serious but less common risks of hormone replacement therapy include:
