Estramon® is a small, discreet transdermal patch that delivers 17-β-estradiol-the principal human estrogen-across the skin at a steady, physiologic rate.
Unlike tablets, the patch bypasses the digestive tract and first-pass liver metabolism, producing smoother hormone profiles and requiring substantially lower doses to achieve the same therapeutic effect. The silicone-based adhesive keeps the patch firmly in place during showering, swimming, and moderate exercise, yet allows easy removal without residue.
For women in the peri- or post-menopausal stage, Estramon rapidly relieves vasomotor hot flushes, night-sweats, palpitations, and the sleep disturbance that so often accompanies them. Long-term use improves vaginal lubrication, prevents accelerated loss of bone mineral density, and has been shown to normalise LDL and HDL cholesterol ratios, thereby supporting cardiovascular health. Because the dose is released continuously over three to four days, users report fewer hormone ‘peaks and troughs’ than with oral therapy and a lower incidence of mood swings or nausea.
Estramon has become an integral component of gender-affirming care for transgender women and non-binary individuals seeking physiologic estrogen levels.
Its non-oral route is especially valuable for patients with migraine, thrombophilia, or elevated triglycerides, in whom oral estrogens can exacerbate risk. Patch sizes from 25 µg to 100 µg per 24 hours enable precise titration based on serum estradiol and clinical goals such as breast development, skin softening, and fat redistribution.
Application is straightforward: after peeling away the protective liner, the patch is pressed onto clean, dry, hair-free skin of the lower abdomen or upper buttock and held for ten seconds. The site is rotated with each change to minimise local irritation. If a uterus is present, a progestogen-often oral micronised progesterone-is added for at least ten days per cycle to protect the endometrium.
When therapy is no longer needed, discontinuation is as simple as removing the patch; hormone levels fall to baseline within twenty-four hours.
General Information
Estramon is a transdermal patch that delivers estradiol, a type of estrogen, through the skin for hormone replacement therapy or feminizing care.
It is used to manage menopause symptoms and as part of feminizing hormone therapy in transgender women.
The patch releases estradiol steadily into the bloodstream, helping to raise and maintain estrogen levels for symptom control or physical transition.
One patch is applied every three to four days, typically changed twice a week.
Symptom relief may start within days to weeks. Feminizing changes develop gradually over months of consistent use.
Apply a new patch as soon as possible and continue with your usual schedule. Do not use two patches at once.
Safety & Side Effects
Minor skin reactions are the most frequent complaints with Estramon: transient redness, faint itching, or a shiny outline after removal affect about one in five users and usually disappear within hours.
Rotating sites and applying the patch to clean, hair-free skin minimizes these issues. Systemic effects resemble those of any estradiol therapy. Temporary breast tenderness, mild water retention, and occasional headache are typical and improve after dose adjustment.
Less common are nausea, mood swings, or acne. In migraine sufferers, stepwise dose increases, and adequate hydration can prevent flare-ups. Serious events are rare but should be recognized early.
Estrogen slightly elevates the risk of blood clots, especially in smokers, individuals with obesity, or inherited clotting disorders; sudden leg pain, swelling, or shortness of breath warrants immediate medical help.
Because estradiol stimulates the endometrium, anyone with a uterus should also take a progesterone to prevent overgrowth and have any unexpected bleeding checked.
True allergy to estradiol itself is virtually unknown. Persistent rash or blistering under the patch is more likely a contact allergy to the acrylic or silicone adhesive; switching brands or changing to a gel solves most cases.
Anaphylaxis has not been reported, but generalised hives, facial swelling, or wheezing after application must be treated as a medical emergency.
It should not be used if you have a history of breast cancer, unexplained vaginal bleeding, liver disease, or blood clots.
Yes, but always inform your healthcare provider about all medications you use, especially hormones or liver enzyme modulators.
No. Estramon should not be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Moderate alcohol use is not known to interfere, but excessive alcohol may affect hormone metabolism.
Usage & Administration
Apply the patch to clean, dry, hairless skin on the lower abdomen or buttocks. Rotate the site with each new patch.
Store at room temperature in the original packaging away from heat and moisture.
Not applicable. Estramon is a patch and not taken orally.
