Furosemide is a powerful diuretic (water pill) used to treat fluid retention (edema) and high blood pressure (hypertension). It works by blocking a specific transporter in the kidneys, which normally reabsorbs sodium, potassium, and chloride in the loop of Henle. When this transporter is inhibited, these electrolytes (salts) stay in the urine and draw water out with them (more salt in the urine translates to more water loss).
This results in increased urine output and reduced fluid buildup in the body. Furosemide is especially effective in conditions like heart failure, liver disease (cirrhosis), kidney disease, and certain lung conditions that cause fluid overload. It also helps lower blood pressure, both by removing excess fluid and possibly by relaxing blood vessels (vasodilation).
Because of its fast action, furosemida is often used in emergencies to reduce swelling or blood pressure quickly. Effects start within 1 hour when taken by mouth and as soon as 15 minutes when given by injection. The medication works for 3–6 hours (oral).
Furosemide is not just a diuretic, it helps relieve breathing difficulties in people with fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema), prevents further kidney damage by reducing pressure, and can be used to promote the elimination of toxic substances through increased urination.
