Testogel (also marketed as Androgel) is a transdermal testosterone replacement therapy used to treat low testosterone levels in adult men and as part of masculinizing hormone therapy for transgender men and non-binary individuals. The gel is applied directly to the skin, allowing testosterone to be gradually absorbed into the bloodstream for consistent hormonal delivery.
In transgender men and non-binary individuals, Testogel is used as part of gender-affirming care to support masculinizing physical changes, which may include increased muscle mass, deepening of the voice, body and facial hair growth, and cessation of menstruation. These effects develop progressively, with some users reporting increased energy or libido within a few weeks. More significant physical changes may take several months.
In cisgender men with hypogonadism (testosterone deficiency), Testogel may help manage symptoms such as fatigue, reduced libido, low mood, and impaired concentration. By restoring testosterone to within physiological ranges, it may support physical strength, sexual function, and overall well-being.
The gel is applied once daily to clean, dry skin, typically on the shoulders, upper arms, or abdomen. It should be allowed to dry fully before dressing. Proper handwashing and contact precautions are essential to prevent unintentional hormone transfer to others.
While generally well tolerated, side effects may include skin irritation, acne, mood changes, or elevated red blood cell counts. Ongoing blood monitoring is recommended to track hormone levels, hematocrit, and liver function. Testogel should not be used by individuals with current or past prostate or breast cancer, or by those not requiring testosterone therapy for medical reasons.
