Description
Estradot is a transdermal patch that delivers estradiol, a form of estrogen that is identical to the hormone produced naturally in the human body. It is used in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to help manage symptoms related to menopause, such as hot flushes, night sweats, mood changes, and vaginal dryness. Estradot is also used in estrogen and feminizing therapy, where it plays a role in reducing the effects of testosteroneand promoting physical traits typically associated with female hormonal patterns.
The patch works by steadily releasing estradiol through the skin and into the bloodstream. This delivery method provides a consistent hormone level, avoiding the fluctuations that can occur with oral treatments. Estradot is typically applied to a clean, dry area of the lower abdomen and replaced twice per week on specific days.
In menopausal individuals, Estradot helps to restore falling estrogen levels, which can reduce the severity of common menopausal symptoms and support bone health. In transgender women and non-binary individuals undergoing feminizing therapy, estradiol contributes to physical changes such as softer skin, breast development, and fat redistribution over time, especially when used alongside an anti-androgen or testosterone blocker.
The strength and frequency of application are tailored to individual needs, based on symptom control and treatment goals.
As with all hormone therapies, potential side effects may include skin irritation at the patch site, breast tenderness, mood fluctuations, or mild bloating. In some cases, longer-term risks such as blood clots (venous thromboembolism), stroke, or cardiovascular issues should be considered, especially depending on medical history and coexisting risk factors.
Estradot offers a non-oral alternative for estrogen therapy, making it a widely used option in both traditional HRT and gender-affirming hormonal care.
General Information
Estradot is an ultra-thin transdermal patch that continuously delivers low-dose estradiol through the skin for hormone replacement.
It alleviates menopausal symptoms, prevents bone loss, and is an option for low-dose transgender maintenance therapy.
Once applied, the patch releases micro-doses of estradiol that enter the bloodstream directly, providing stable oestrogen levels and reduced gastrointestinal side effects.
Patches (25–100 µg/24 h) are replaced twice weekly. Your doctor will select the strength that controls symptoms with the fewest side effects.
Hot flushes often improve within 1–2 weeks; bone benefits require months.
Replace the patch as soon as remembered, keeping the original change schedule. Missing more than 24 hours may lead to spotting or symptom return.
Safety & Side Effects
- Frequent: local itching, mild headache, breast tenderness, mild swelling of fingers or ankles.
- Infrequent: mood changes, weight change, gallbladder issues, high blood pressure.
- Rare but serious: blood clots, stroke, certain cancers. Seek urgent help for calf pain, sudden chest pain, or unexplained jaundice.
Contact dermatitis-itchy red skin under the patch-can occur. Rotate sites and use barrier cream if instructed. Generalised allergic reactions are rare.
Some seizure medications, antibiotics, and herbal products may lower patch efficacy. Always inform your doctor.
Many users sleep better once night sweats resolve.
No-remove the patch immediately if pregnancy is suspected.
Regular annual reviews are recommended; use the lowest effective dose.
Alcohol is not contraindicated but may trigger hot flushes.
Usage & Administration
Apply to clean, dry skin of the lower abdomen or buttocks; do not place on breasts. Press firmly for 10 seconds.
Keep in pouch below 25°C. Protect from direct heat.
When traveling: Carry spare patches in their pouches and avoid leaving them in a hot car or checked luggage. Body scanners at airports do not affect the medicine, but exceptionally high sauna temperatures may loosen adhesive-replace the patch if it falls off.
People with hormone-dependent cancers, unexplained vaginal bleeding, active thrombosis, severe liver disease, or pregnancy should avoid Estradot.
Choose a new patch site each time and allow at least one week before re-using the same spot. If the edges lift, press firmly or cover with hypoallergenic tape. A mild, fragrance-free moisturiser can be applied after patch removal-but never just before application because it will affect adhesion.
Removing extra patches usually resolves mild nausea or breast tenderness. Seek advice for severe symptoms.
