Description
Co-amoxiclav is a combination antibiotic used to treat many different bacterial infections. It contains two active ingredients: amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. These work together to stop bacteria from growing and spreading in the body.
Amoxicillin is a type of penicillin that kills bacteria by damaging their outer cell wall. This wall protects bacteria, so when it’s weakened, the bacteria break apart and die. However, some bacteria can fight back by making an enzyme (called beta-lactamase) that destroys amoxicillin. That’s where clavulanic acid comes in, it blocks this enzyme and stops the bacteria from protecting themselves. This allows amoxicillin to do its job properly, even against bacteria that are normally resistant.
Co-amoxiclav is used to treat a wide range of infections. These include respiratory infections like bronchitis, pneumonia, and sinus infections; urinary tract infections like cystitis or kidney infections; skin and soft tissue infections such as abscesses, cellulitis, or infected wounds; and dental infections. It is also sometimes used for bone or joint infections and infections in the abdominal area.
This medication does not reduce pain or swelling directly. Instead, it treats the cause of the problem, the bacteria. As the infection clears, symptoms like pain, fever, or swelling usually improve on their own.
General Information
Co-Amoxiclav is a type of antibiotic that combines two active ingredients: amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic that helps kill bacteria, while clavulanic acid is added to stop certain bacteria from fighting off the antibiotic, making the treatment more effective.
This medication is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It’s often prescribed for respiratory infections like pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis. It is also effective for urinary tract infections such as cystitis or kidney infections. Co-Amoxiclav is commonly used to treat skin and soft tissue infections, such as cellulitis, infected wounds, or abscesses. In addition, it is often used for dental infections, including tooth abscesses and gum infections.
The two ingredients in Co-Amoxiclav work together to fight bacteria in the body. Amoxicillin attacks the bacteria by damaging their outer wall, which causes them to break apart and die. However, some bacteria can defend themselves by producing an enzyme that breaks down the antibiotic. Clavulanic acid blocks this enzyme, allowing amoxicillin to keep working, even against more resistant bacteria.
The standard dose for adults depends on the type and severity of the infection.
One common dose is 500 mg of amoxicillin with 125 mg of clavulanic acid, taken three times a day.
Another option is a higher dose of 875 mg of amoxicillin with 125 mg of clavulanic acid, taken twice a day.
In more serious infections, the dose may be increased to 1 gram of amoxicillin with 200 mg of clavulanic acid, taken every 12 hours.
Co-Amoxiclav usually starts to work within a few hours after the first dose. Many people begin to feel better within two to three days, although it’s important to complete the full course, even if symptoms improve quickly.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and continue as normal. You should not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed one.
Safety & Side Effects
The most common side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, and an upset stomach. Some people may also get mild skin rashes or itching. In rare cases, more serious side effects can occur, such as severe allergic reactions, liver problems like yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or blood-related issues like unusual bleeding or easy bruising.
Yes, like other antibiotics, Co-Amoxiclav can cause allergic reactions in some people. These reactions can range from mild symptoms like skin rashes or itching to more serious ones like swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or even a severe reaction called anaphylaxis. If any of these symptoms appear, stop taking the medication and get medical attention straight away.
This antibiotic is not meant for long-term use. It is usually prescribed for short courses ranging from a few days to two weeks. Taking it for too long can increase the risk of side effects, yeast infections, and antibiotic resistance, where bacteria become harder to treat in the future.
This medication doesn’t usually affect sleep or cause drowsiness. Most people can take it without noticing any changes in energy or alertness.
Co-Amoxiclav can interact with other medications. For example, it may affect blood thinners like warfarin, increasing the risk of bleeding. It can also interfere with the effectiveness of some oral contraceptives and may interact with medications that affect the liver or kidneys. Always check for interactions if you are taking other medicines.
Co-Amoxiclav is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy, especially if the benefits outweigh any possible risks. It belongs to a pregnancy category that indicates no known risk in animal studies, though studies in pregnant women are limited. For breastfeeding, the medication does pass into breast milk in small amounts. It is usually safe to use, but in rare cases, it may cause mild stomach upset or diarrhoea in the baby.
Drinking alcohol in moderation while taking Co-Amoxiclav is generally considered safe. There is no direct interaction between the medication and alcohol, though it’s still wise to avoid excessive drinking while your body is recovering from an infection.
Usage & Administration
Co-Amoxiclav can be taken with or without food, but it is best taken with a meal to help avoid stomach upset. Always follow the instructions provided with your prescription and complete the full course of treatment.
The tablets should be kept at room temperature in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. If you’re using the liquid form (suspension), it needs to be stored in the refrigerator and should be used within the time frame stated on the label, usually within 7 to 14 days after opening. The liquid should never be frozen.
People who are allergic to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, or other penicillin-type antibiotics should not take Co-Amoxiclav. It is also not suitable for anyone who has had a severe allergic reaction to similar antibiotics in the past. People with liver disease or a history of jaundice caused by antibiotics should avoid this medication as well.
Taking too much Co-Amoxiclav can cause stomach-related symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, or abdominal pain. If an overdose is suspected, it’s important to seek medical help immediately.
Yes, it’s recommended to take this medicine with food. Doing so can help reduce stomach upset and support better absorption of the medication in the body.
You should not break, chew, or crush Co-Amoxiclav tablets. This can affect how the medicine is absorbed and might irritate your mouth or throat. Tablets should always be swallowed whole with water.
