Description
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It belongs to the cephalosporin family, a group of antibiotics that work by damaging the protective cell wall of bacteria. This weakens the bacteria and causes them to break apart and die, which helps clear the infection from the body.
This medication is commonly used for infections such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), ear infections (otitis media), throat infections (pharyngitis and tonsillitis), respiratory infections like bronchitis, and uncomplicated gonorrhoea. It targets bacteria such as E. coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
Cefixime does not reduce pain or inflammation directly. Instead, it helps remove the infection itself by killing the bacteria causing it. Once the bacteria are eliminated, symptoms like pain, fever, or discomfort often improve naturally.
It is usually taken once or twice a day, depending on the type of infection. The treatment is short-term and typically lasts a few days. Most people tolerate Cefixime well. Possible side effects may include mild stomach upset or diarrhoea.
To ensure the best effect, it’s important to take Cefixime consistently for the full duration of treatment. Stopping too early can allow bacteria to survive and potentially return.
This product is intended for bacterial infections only and will not work against viruses like the common cold or flu.
General Information
Cefixime is a broad-spectrum, third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in various parts of the body, such as the urinary tract, ears, throat, lungs, and gonorrhoea.
Cefixime is used to treat various bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, ear infections, throat and tonsil infections, respiratory infections, and uncomplicated gonorrhoea. It may also be used for other conditions like sinus infections and certain gastrointestinal infections.
Cefixime works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in the bacterial cell wall, preventing the formation of peptidoglycan, which is essential for bacterial cell wall integrity. This leads to cell lysis and death, making cefixime a bactericidal antibiotic effective against a wide range of bacterial infections.
The usual dose of cefixime for adults is 400 mg once daily or divided into two doses of 200 mg every 12 hours.
Cefixime starts working a few hours after you take it. It reaches its highest level in the blood between 2 to 6 hours.
If you miss a dose of cefixime, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.
Safety & Side Effects
Cefixime can cause several side effects, including common issues like diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain, and headache, as well as more serious reactions such as allergic responses, severe skin reactions, and antibiotic-associated diarrhoea.
Cefixime is generally not recommended for long-term use due to the risk of developing antibiotic-resistant bacteria and potential side effects.
Yes, cefixime can cause allergic reactions. These reactions can range from mild symptoms like rash, itching, or hives to severe reactions such as anaphylaxis, which may include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, and rapid heartbeat.
Severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis are also possible, though rare. If you experience any signs of an allergic reaction, stop taking cefixime and seek medical help immediately.
Cefixime can be taken with other medications, but caution is advised due to potential interactions. It has major interactions with medications like warfarin and certain vaccines.
Cefixime should not be used with live vaccines like the typhoid vaccine. Additionally, it can affect the efficacy of hormonal contraceptives and increase the toxicity of certain drugs like aminoglycosides.
Cefixime is classified as a pregnancy category B drug, meaning animal studies have shown no risk to the foetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. It is recommended for use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and the benefits outweigh the risks.
For breastfeeding, cefixime is excreted into human milk, and its use is not recommended unless the benefits to the mother outweigh the potential risks to the infant.
Cefixime is not typically associated with affecting sleep or alertness. However, it can cause dizziness as a side effect, which might indirectly affect sleep or alertness in some individuals.
There are no known major interactions between cefixime and alcohol. However, heavy drinking can impair your immune response, potentially making it harder for your body to fight infections. Additionally, a rare case of an atypical disulfiram-like reaction has been reported with cefixime overdose and alcohol consumption.
Usage & Administration
Cefixime should be taken as directed on the prescription. You can take it with or without food, but if it upsets your stomach, consider taking it with food.
Cefixime tablets should be stored at room temperature (15-30°C), away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Liquid forms can be stored at room temperature or in the refrigerator and must be tightly closed. Any unused liquid suspension should be discarded after 14 days.
Cefixime should not be taken by individuals who are allergic to cefixime, other cephalosporins, or penicillin antibiotics. It is also contraindicated in patients with a known allergy to any ingredients in the medication. Additionally, caution is advised for those with kidney or liver disease, bleeding problems, or gastrointestinal conditions like colitis.
If you take too much cefixime, you may experience severe side effects such as diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and in rare cases, seizures. There is no specific antidote for cefixime overdose, and it is not significantly removed by dialysis. If you suspect an overdose, seek emergency medical attention.
Cefixime can be taken with or without food. However, taking it with food may help reduce gastrointestinal side effects like stomach upset.
Cefixime tablets can be split or cut in half if directed by your doctor, as they typically have a line down the middle to facilitate this.
