Description
Advil contains ibuprofen, a medicine used to ease pain, reduce swelling, and lower fever. It is part of a group of drugs called non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs. Ibuprofen works by blocking enzymes called cyclooxygenases (COX), which are involved in the production of prostaglandins. These are natural substances that play a role in causing pain, inflammation, and fever. By lowering prostaglandin levels, ibuprofen can relieve common symptoms such as headaches, muscle soreness, or joint pain.
The effect usually begins within 30 to 45 minutes. It may start working a bit faster on an empty stomach, but taking it with food can help protect the stomach lining. After being absorbed, the medicine spreads throughout the body and also reaches joint fluid, which is why it can help with conditions like arthritis. The body removes ibuprofen through the kidneys. The medicine stays active in the body for a few hours (Ibuprofen has a half-life of about 2 to 4 hours, meaning its effects typically last for 4 to 6 hours), and adults can take it every six to eight hours if needed. (The maximum over-the-counter daily dose for adults is 1,200 milligrams.)
Since prostaglandins also support the stomach lining and kidney function, it is important to use ibuprofen with care. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest amount of time. Taking it with food, drinking enough fluids, and avoiding heavy alcohol use may help reduce the risk of stomach issues. People over 60 or with a history of stomach ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding, might be advised to use a protective medicine or gastroprotective medication, such as a proton pump inhibitor, alongside ibuprofen.
General Information
Advil is a branded form of ibuprofen, an NSAID available in tablets, gel-caps, chewables, and suspensions. Each adult tablet contains 200 mg or 400 mg ibuprofen.
It relieves headaches, toothache, period cramps, back pain, muscle strains, minor arthritis, cold-and-flu aches, and reduces fever. Prescription doses treat bursitis, tendonitis, and post-operative swelling.
Ibuprofen temporarily blocks cyclo-oxygenase enzymes that produce prostaglandins - the chemical messengers that create pain, fever, and swelling. Less prostaglandin equals less discomfort.
Adults: 200-400 mg every 6-8 hours, maximum 1,200 mg over 24 hours.
Most people feel relief within 20-30 minutes; anti-inflammatory benefit for sprains or arthritis builds over a few doses.
For pain or fever, simply take when needed but respect the 6-hour spacing.

Not after 28 weeks gestation; it may close the fetal ductus arteriosus. Short occasional doses earlier are generally acceptable. Ibuprofen passes into milk in tiny amounts and is considered breastfeeding-safe.
Heavy drinking plus ibuprofen raises ulcer and liver-strain risk. Moderate social drinking is usually fine if your stomach is healthy.
