What is Ecural?
Ecural contains mometasone furoate, a synthetic corticosteroid similar to the natural hormone cortisol produced by the body. It is applied directly to the skin.
Topical corticosteroids are used to calm inflammatory skin reactions. In conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, the immune system in the skin becomes overactive. This leads to redness, swelling, scaling and intense itching. Ecural reduces this immune response and helps restore the skin barrier.
Ecural is considered a potent corticosteroid. This means it is effective for moderate to severe inflammatory skin conditions but must be used carefully and for limited periods.
What is it used for?
Ecural is prescribed for inflammatory and itchy skin conditions that respond to corticosteroid treatment, including:
- Psoriasis
- Atopic dermatitis (eczema)
- Allergic contact dermatitis
- Irritant contact dermatitis
The ointment form is particularly suitable for very dry, thickened or cracked skin.
The fatty cream is suitable for inflamed but less thickened areas.
The solution is specifically indicated for inflammatory conditions of the hairy scalp, such as scalp psoriasis.
Ecural is not suitable for untreated bacterial, viral or fungal skin infections.
How does Ecural work?
In inflammatory skin diseases, immune cells release substances that cause redness, swelling and itching.
Mometasone furoate works by:
- Reducing inflammatory mediator release
- Suppressing excessive immune activity in the skin
- Decreasing redness and swelling
- Relieving itching
By calming inflammation, Ecural helps break the itch scratch cycle and allows the skin to heal.
Because corticosteroids can be absorbed through the skin, especially when used over large areas or for prolonged periods, medical supervision is important.
Who should not use Ecural?
Do not use Ecural if you:
- Are allergic to mometasone furoate or other corticosteroids
- Have rosacea on the face
- Have acne vulgaris
- Have perioral dermatitis
- Have untreated bacterial, viral or fungal skin infections
- Have skin atrophy
- Have tuberculosis or syphilis affecting the skin
- Apply it to wounds or skin ulcers
Ecural must not be applied in or near the eyes.
Children under 2 years (cream) or under 6 years (ointment and solution) should not use Ecural unless specifically advised by a doctor.
Pregnancy and fertility
Use during pregnancy should only occur after medical assessment. Topical corticosteroids may be absorbed into the bloodstream and potentially affect the unborn child if used extensively.
During breastfeeding, Ecural should not be applied to the breast area.
If prolonged or high dose treatment is necessary, breastfeeding may need to be interrupted.
How to use and dosage
Always use Ecural exactly as prescribed.
Ecural is applied once daily in a thin layer to the affected skin.
Treatment duration should generally not exceed three weeks.
Application on the face should not exceed five days.
Do not apply to more than 20 percent of the body surface area.
In children over the approved age, treatment should be as short as possible and limited to less than 10 percent of body surface area.
If improvement occurs, your doctor may recommend switching to a weaker corticosteroid.
Possible side effects
Common side effects include:
- Tingling or burning sensation
- Skin irritation
- Papules or pustules
Less common but important side effects include:
- Skin thinning (atrophy)
- Stretch marks
- Increased hair growth
- Changes in skin pigmentation
- Secondary infections
Long term or excessive use may suppress adrenal function or lead to Cushing syndrome, particularly in children.
Blurred vision has been reported with corticosteroid use.
If you notice unusual symptoms or worsening of your skin condition, seek medical advice.
Important safety information
Ecural is a potent topical corticosteroid. Misuse or prolonged application can increase the risk of:
- Skin thinning
- Hormonal suppression
- Delayed wound healing
- Masking of underlying infections
In the genital or anal area, ointment or cream containing white petrolatum may reduce the strength of latex condoms.
The scalp solution contains propylene glycol and may cause skin irritation in some individuals.
Always follow medical guidance and avoid self extending the treatment period.
When to seek medical help
Contact a healthcare professional if you experience:
- Severe skin irritation
- Signs of infection
- Skin thinning or stretch marks
- Vision disturbances
- No improvement after the prescribed treatment period
If Ecural is accidentally swallowed or used excessively over a prolonged period, medical evaluation is required due to the risk of systemic corticosteroid effects.
General Information
Yes. Ecural contains mometasone furoate 1 mg/g, which is classified as a potent topical corticosteroid in most European classification systems. Potent corticosteroids are prescribed for moderate to severe inflammatory skin conditions and should be used for limited treatment periods to reduce the risk of skin thinning and systemic absorption.
Ecural may start reducing redness and itching within a few days. Clinical improvement in eczema or psoriasis is often noticeable within the first week of treatment. Full resolution depends on the severity of the condition and treatment adherence.
Topical corticosteroids such as mometasone act by suppressing inflammatory mediators in the skin.
Yes. Ecural may be prescribed for certain types of psoriasis, particularly plaque psoriasis and scalp psoriasis (solution formulation).
However, abrupt discontinuation in psoriasis may cause rebound flare-ups. In some cases, doctors recommend tapering or switching to a milder steroid.
No. Ecural should not be used on untreated bacterial, viral or fungal skin infections.
Corticosteroids may suppress visible inflammation while allowing infections to worsen or spread. If infection is suspected, appropriate antimicrobial treatment must be initiated.
Ecural and Elocon both contain mometasone furoate 1 mg/g. They are different brand names of the same active substance but may differ in manufacturer and excipients.
Safety & Side Effects
Yes. Skin thinning (atrophy) is a known side effect of potent topical corticosteroids, particularly when used:
- On the face
- In skin folds
- Under occlusion
- For extended periods
The risk increases with duration and treated body surface area.
Yes. In eczema management, emollients are strongly recommended alongside topical corticosteroids.
General guidance:
Apply Ecural first to affected areas, allow absorption, then apply moisturiser.
Moisturisers help restore the skin barrier and may reduce the need for prolonged steroid use.
Ecural may be prescribed for inflammatory skin conditions in the genital area, but treatment duration is typically short due to increased absorption.
Additionally, ointments or creams containing white petrolatum may reduce the strength of latex condoms when used in the genital or anal area.
When used correctly and for short periods, systemic hormonal effects are unlikely.
However, prolonged use over large areas may suppress the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. This risk is higher in children.
Visual disturbances have been reported rarely with corticosteroid use. If blurred vision or visual changes occur, medical evaluation is recommended.
In short-term eczema treatment, stopping is usually safe once inflammation has resolved.
In psoriasis or prolonged treatment, sudden discontinuation may cause rebound symptoms. Tapering under medical supervision may be advised
Usage & Administration
Ecural can be prescribed for short-term use on the face, but only under medical supervision. Facial skin is thinner and absorbs corticosteroids more easily, increasing the risk of:
- Skin thinning (atrophy)
- Perioral dermatitis
- Rosacea-like reactions
Facial treatment is generally limited to a few days.
Ecural is usually applied once daily. Long-term daily use without medical supervision is not recommended due to risks such as:
- Skin thinning
- Stretch marks
- Adrenal suppression
- Increased infection risk
Treatment duration typically does not exceed three weeks, depending on indication.
Short-term over-application is unlikely to cause immediate harm. However, prolonged excessive use — especially over large body areas — may lead to systemic corticosteroid effects, including:
- Suppression of adrenal gland function
- Cushing syndrome
- Hormonal imbalance (especially in children)
Medical review is recommended if excessive or long-term overuse occurs.
Mometasone furoate acts locally in the skin. A small proportion may be absorbed into the bloodstream, especially if applied over large areas or under occlusion.
Systemic exposure remains low when used as directed.
